Indoor vs outdoor LED displays: choosing the right screen in Oman
An LED display is one of the highest-impact investments a business can make in visibility — but only if you buy the right screen for the job. The difference between an indoor and outdoor unit isn't just brightness, and getting it wrong is expensive. Here's how to choose well in Oman's climate.
Start with pixel pitch
Pixel pitch is the distance between LEDs, measured in millimetres. A smaller pitch means a sharper image at close range. As a rule of thumb: the closer your audience stands, the smaller the pitch you need.
- Indoor, close viewing (retail, reception, meeting rooms): fine pitch, roughly P1.5–P2.5.
- Indoor, larger halls (conferences, showrooms): around P2.5–P4.
- Outdoor billboards and facades (viewed from further away): P4–P10, where a larger pitch is perfectly sharp at distance and more cost-effective.
Brightness and Oman's sun
Outdoor screens in Oman must fight direct, intense sunlight. Look for high brightness — commonly 5,000 to 7,500 nits for outdoor units — versus a few hundred to around 1,200 nits indoors. A screen that looks brilliant in a showroom will wash out completely on a Muscat street if it's under-specified.
Weather and ingress protection
Outdoor displays need a high IP rating (typically IP65 on the front) to resist dust, humidity and the occasional downpour. Heat management matters too — components must tolerate high ambient temperatures without failing.
| Factor | Indoor | Outdoor |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness | 300–1,200 nits | 5,000–7,500 nits |
| Pixel pitch | P1.5–P4 | P4–P10 |
| Protection | Standard | IP65, heat-tolerant |
| Typical use | Retail, lobbies, events | Billboards, facades, stadiums |
