E-invoicing in Oman (Fawtara): what businesses need to know

Oman is moving to mandatory electronic invoicing under the Oman Tax Authority's Fawtara initiative. Rather than emailing a PDF, businesses will generate structured, machine-readable invoices that can be validated and reported. If your invoicing still lives in Word or a basic accounting tool, now is the time to plan the transition.

What e-invoicing actually means

An e-invoice isn't just a digital copy of a paper invoice. It's a structured data file — typically built on the UBL 2.1 standard — that carries every invoice detail in defined fields, secured with a digital signature and often a QR code. This lets tax systems read and verify invoices automatically, reducing fraud and manual error.

Why Oman is adopting it

A phased rollout

Like other countries in the region, Oman is expected to phase Fawtara in gradually — typically starting with larger taxpayers before extending to the wider business population. The sensible move is not to wait for your phase, but to make sure your systems can produce compliant structured invoices ahead of time.

How to prepare now

  1. Use a capable system — an ERP that can output structured, standards-based invoices.
  2. Clean up your master data — accurate tax numbers, customer details and product data.
  3. Confirm VAT configuration — e-invoicing builds directly on correct VAT treatment.
  4. Plan integration — for connecting to the OTA platform when your phase arrives.
Bottom line: Businesses already on a modern ERP will find the transition straightforward. Those on manual invoicing should start planning now.
